Short answer: handmade crochet soft toys start at about Rs 1,000 and run to around Rs 2,500 for larger detailed pieces. For a baby, the things that matter are no loose small parts, safe firm stuffing, and yarn that washes gently. I make them with that in mind.
What makes a crochet toy safe for a small child
- No parts that can come off. For babies and toddlers I embroider the eyes and face with yarn rather than using plastic safety eyes. Ask for this when you order and I will make it that way.
- Tight stitches. Toys are worked on a smaller hook than the yarn suggests, so the fabric is dense and the stuffing cannot escape or be pulled through.
- Firm, clean stuffing. Fibre filling, packed properly, so the toy holds its shape through years of being carried around.
- Nothing long and loose. No long cords or ribbons on pieces intended for babies.
Everything is handmade rather than factory tested, so as with any soft toy, a very small baby should be supervised.

Washing a much loved toy
Spot clean where you can: a damp cloth with a little mild soap on the mark, rather than soaking the whole toy, because stuffing takes a long time to dry inside.
